Coral Reef, what is it? Coral Reef is a ridge of rock in the sea formed by the growth and deposit of coral. Coral Reef has many benefits and I will be talking about these benefits, but they are being destroyed all around the world because of people that pollute the ocean or many other things that can destroy Coral Reefs. One big benefit that Coral Reefs have is that they protect coastlines from storms and erosion, provide jobs for local communities, and also offer opportunities for recreation. Another benefit is that they are a source of food and new medicines. Over half a billion people depend on Coral Reefs for food, income, and protection. These two benefits would make Coral Reef impossible to live without for many reasons, for example if we don’t have any Coral Reefs there would be storms and a lot of erosion, there would be less jobs for local communities, no food for people or, income, or, and protection for the ones that need it. The Coral Reef is also home to over one million diverse aquatic species, including thousands of fish species. There are also multiple ways that us humans damage Coral Reefs and we don’t realize that it can turn them extinct. One of the main reasons that Coral Reefs are being destroyed are by pollution. Now the question is how does pollution exactly damage Reefs well, when pollution enters the water, they smother reefs, speed the growth of damaging algae, and lower water quality. Pollution can also make corals more susceptible to disease, impede coral growth and reproduction, and cause changes in food structures on the reef. Another way that Corals are being damaged is by Coral mining. Some might wonder why Corals are being mined and that is for limestone and construction materials. When Corals are mined they are destroyed and this would be bad for some fish. Another major way that Coral Reefs are being destroyed is by climate change, such as warming temperatures, which causes coral bleaching, which if severe kills the coral. Another way that Corals are being destroyed are by Poison or Dynamite Fishing, this is common to try to catch fish but sometimes it is caught in the coral and the coral often dies in the cloud of poison. One last way that i’m going to talk about that harms Corals is careless tourism. Careless tourism is caused by a few different ways. One way that it is caused is by uncontrolled building and irresponsible business operations, another way that causes this is increased discharge of wastewater, and lastly another way that careless tourism is caused is by careless behavior like for example while swimming in the water, you would step on a coral reef. Scientists believe that by 2050 90% of corals are to be destroyed. In the end of this you guys can see that corals are very important and have many benefits, so it would be bad for the world if corals become extinct. If corals die then there would be many things that would affect humans for example to be able to breath well you have to have a healthy ocean and coral reefs keep the ocean clean and another thing that would affect humans is that coral reefs provide food for humans and some countries eat that food so some people might start starving which would be bad.
